The Challenge

A diverse and multifaceted cultural and educational enterprise, the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) is an active and visible component of the Smithsonian Institution; the world's largest museum complex. NMAI cares for one of the world's most expansive collections of Native artifacts, including objects, photographs, archives and media covering the entire Western Hemisphere. Their award-winning membership magazine, American Indian Magazine, is a quarterly publication distributed to 50,000 members.

Our Solution

For the past twenty years, Perceptible has worked with Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) to produce its quarterly members magazine –American Indian. Keeping the magazine relevant, culturally accurate and visually stunning has been the long-term challenge.

American Indian magazine is at the core of membership development for NMAI. Keeping the content pertinent and topical and producing a magazine that members prize as a piece of cultural information is vital. Over the past two decades, the magazine has won numerous awards and progressed for being simply a print publication to a true omni-platform with a digital offering, an App and a Zaboutme driven web presence with a detailed archive for academic research.

The Result

All award winning NMAI magazine issues are now available online. Physical publications, e-magazines and online stories deliver content seamlessly, regardless of the reader's device. This new integrated digital paradigm fosters the growth of new audiences and memberships and reinforces the value of the magazine with existing subscribers.
